STORY

This is the oldest known secular song in the Nordic countries. The title translates to something like ‘I dreamt a dream last night’ and it was written down on the last leaf of Skånske Lov - one of the first set of laws introduced by Danish king Valdemar Sejr (Valdemar the Victorious) in the beginning of 13th century. There are several interpretations of the text, as the meaning of the words silki and ærlik pæl is obscure, but it could be something like I dreamt a dream last night of equality and honest measure.
